Archaeology is making a comeback in Hollywood this summer with the opening of the fourth Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Although Dr. Jones's methods may leave contemporary archaeologists shaking their heads in disbelief and, at times, pure horror, one can't argue against the fact that his movies have entertained millions for decades. In fact, ask many young archaeologists today what inspired them to pursue the field, and the name Indiana Jones or the humming of the famous theme song will, not surprisingly, enter into the answer in some form or another.
This summer, the Museum's Education Department is unveiling its new archaeological dig boxes. These boxes will give children and adults alike the opportunity to be their own Indiana Jones as they learn proper digging techniques to uncover hidden treasures. Museum staff will make appearances at local Regal Theatres for the May 22 opening of Indiana Jones to demonstrate the new dig boxes and promote the Museum and its programs to the public. The Museum will open two new exhibitions this spring and summer: Gods & Gold, an archaeological exhibit with Latin American artifacts from our own amazing collections, and Beyond Reasonable Drought, a climate change exhibit with special emphasis on the relationship between people and climate. Through the efforts of the Museum's Development Department, the Museum of Man is partnering with select Regal Theatres in San Diego to promote Museum admission and membership, and to inform the public about archaeological education resources at the Museum. Tell your friends: just go to any participating Regal Theatre to see the newest Indiana Jones movie, opening May 22, 2008. They can save their ticket stubs from the movie to receive $1 off admission to the Museum of Man and a 20% discount on Museum membership!
